6 Money Saving Back-to-School Tips

Saving money today and for the future

The new school year is just around the corner. It’s a fun time for everyone, from students to parents, teachers, and more. But what’s not so fun are the back-to-school shopping trips and expenses. And how do you save for college with all of those extra costs? We have six tips to help you save some money today and for your future college grad.

Don’t Buy New Clothes (yet): New clothes are a back-to-school ritual for most families. But you can save a lot of money and time by waiting until October or November to do that clothes and shoe shopping. That’s especially true if the items never get worn because they are not what all the other kids are wearing.

Buy Used Electronics: This includes laptops, computers, graphing calculators, and smartphones. Professionally reconditioned items from Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, and more can save you a lot of money. And they are just as good as the full-price version.

Choose Generic: Notebooks, three-ring binders, paper, pencils, and pens are all pretty generic. So why pay extra for a name brand? Choose the store brand and save a few bucks.

Shop the Sales: You don’t have to pay full price for shoes or other items. Instead, watch for weekend sales and other money-saving opportunities. Don’t forget about your online retail options as well.

Use a Rewards Credit Card: Earning points for every dollar you spend is a nice, easy way of saving money. With a Signature Rewards Credit Card from Central Willamette, you’ll earn 1.5 points for every dollar you spend. Then, use those points for cash, travel, or other back-to-school supplies.

Open a Coverdell Education Savings Account: Designed for students 18 and under, a Coverdell account helps you and those in your family save money toward college. Anyone can make contributions to the account with limits of up to $2,000 per year per child. Best of all, the money grows tax-deferred, and withdrawals are tax-free when used for college (tuition, books, room and board).
